Imagine a paradise island vacation full of tropical sunshine, cool water and endless stretches of sugary beaches spilling off into nowhere. Everywhere: relaxation.
You’ll get all this and more at the Virgin Gorda, one of the hottest destinations in all of the British Virgin Islands. Full to the brim of superb delight and vacation excitation, you’ll experience the ultimate in fun and rejuvenation.
But come on – you could say the same about all of the islands. What, exactly, makes The Virgin Gorda the best?
First, some facts: The Virgin Gorda is second only to the exciting Tortola Island destination. A sleek two miles wide, this green tropical paradise extends a total of 10 miles, cutting through the mystical blue Caribbean and forming an austere, dream-like ripple of land amidst the countless other islands of the BVI.
To Tortola’s east by 12 miles and 26 miles from the US Virgin Island St. Thomas, The Virgin Gorda island paradise destination is home to less than 1,500 happy locals, making this beautiful place to vacation a secluded wonder as well.
Its name was derived a bit unfortunately. For whatever reason, ol’ Columbus was on this kick about calling all these islands that he ran across “Virgins.” Or, 11,000 virgins, to be precise. It all comes from this legend about some St. Ursula who was accompanied by 11,000 virgins when she was martyred back in the Fourth Century. Why he chose the name for these islands in particular remains a mystery. Was it because they were pretty? Perhaps – who knows.
Anyway, when he came across “Virgin Gorda,” he must have elbowed one of his buddies, laughed gruffly and said, “hey, that one looks like a ‘fat’ Virgin.” That’s because, when following the contour of the island’s mountain ridge, one can make out a bulge. To Columbus, this looked like a fat stomach, and there you go.
Really, there’s no accounting for taste. That said, I guess you could sort of picture it if you stared hard enough while looking out from the crow’s nest of a 15th century sailboat. In the same way you could stare up at the clouds and come up with a lot of different names.
But why waste your time? At Virgin Gorda, there’s plenty of fun and relaxation that needs to be taken care of without having to worry about making up silly names for everything you see. After all, you’ll be seeing a lot. Indeed, any vacationer to the island of Virgin Gorda gladly welcomes the chance to discover a wide open vacation destination that’s perfect for your everyday luxury and once-in-a-lifetime wonder.
It’s got a pretty interesting history, too. For the longest time it was secluded community of agricultural types who had very little contact with the outside world. That all changed in the 1960’s when the famous philanthropist Rockefeller set out to set up some rules for the preservation of the land.
Having already done an excellent job securing the eternal preservation of a park on one of the US Virgin Islands, Rockefeller set up the resort destination called Little Dix in the hopes that it would lord over nothing but silence and seclusion. While there’s been a little ruffling of this ideal (other people build hotels, too) it is still a quiet and idyllic destination, bar none.
Now, happy vacationers are able to come from all over to this peaceful island and enjoy the silence, relaxation and lighthearted enjoyment to be had at any of the quaint villages and resorts with their restaurants, shops and overall charming ambience.
In addition, vacationers here take advantage of the amazing blue waters and certain shallow bays that are perfect for extreme water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, parasailing, kayaking boating and more. Moreover, it’s fun to enjoy the outdoor adventure here. Why not hike the bulge of the fat woman? (Just a suggestion).
