Welcome to Jost Van Dyke

An Island Overview of Jost Van Dyke BVI

There's a word that not many people would use to describe the British Virgin Islands. It's extreme. That's right - extreme seclusion. And out of all the 50+ British Virgin Islands, there's one that lives up to that description more than any of the others. It's called Jost Van Dyke, and you just have to come here.

Why? Traveling to Jost Van Dyke will expose you to an island paradise the likes of which you've never experienced... in your life. Full to the brim of intoxicating white sandy beaches and cool fresh turquoise Caribbean water the stretches out to - God knows - nowhere. Ah, yes. It's perfect.

Welcome to the beautiful island of Jost Van Dyke

It's tiny, too: only 4 square miles of pure island pleasure and a modest population of 150, this paradise island destination is so far off the beaten track that you may have a difficult time even getting here.

Again, perfect.

Along with what makes the island of Jost Van Dyke a truly special destination is the amazing rugged aspect to it. Thrust up volcanically from the depths of the rich blue Caribbean just to the West of Tortola, this superb island decries the amazing power of nature itself.

Where does Jost Van Dyke get its name? It comes from the name of an 18th century Dutch settler who inhabited the island. (Yes, even back then they exclaimed "perfect!" upon discovering its secluded bliss). Along with his Dutch compatriots, Mr. Van Dyke was part of a Quaker colony that came to this island in order to set up a plantation for sugar cane.

But the fun doesn't end there. Did you know that there are even smaller islands that Jost Van Dyke? For starters, how about Little Jost Van Dyke (it really is an island) and others that add to the emerald charm and beauty popping out of the exquisite Caribbean blue.

Secluded, yet "Alive"

Along with this influx of culture from all around comes an amazing selection of fine cuisine offered at any of the superb dining locales throughout the island.

In addition, there are a handful of fine bungalows and rental properties - even hotels, that you could use for a lovely lodging experience. That is, book a place in advance if you prefer not to sleep out under the warm sand of the beach and starry spectacle of the naked sky as you sleep. That's also an option.

Moreover, check out the amazing natural scenery that you can experience in the beautiful jungle nature overlying all of the land here in Jost Van Dyke. Part of the secluded charm of this paradise island destination is that it's not exactly, well, polished.

In fact, the terrain here is more rugged than all hell, and you'd better love that if you're coming here. This is one of the reasons that Jost Van Dyke is an ideal destination for anybody who is seeking to discover the true exhilaration that island hiking can engender.

For those seeking relaxation - whether coming back from a thorough hike or simply plopping right down on the beach without a thought for doing anything else, a few of the most fantastic beach destinations on the island of Jost Van Dyke are the Great Harbour and White Bay. With horseshoe arcs of blinding white sand and deep turquoise water you can see all the way to the bottom of, these beach destinations make Jost Van Dyke into more than just a random island in the midst of the BVI, but rather a veritable gem of the Caribbean.
