What to See on Jost Van Dyke

Gaze out upon the rugged, austere jungle island terrain jutting up from the blue Caribbean, or watch a sunset like the sky up pink, orange and red. At last, you've arrived at Jost Van Dyke, a truly amazing and friendly island destination...

Sandy beaches of Jost Van Dyke

Coming to Jost Van Dyke is like entering a magical paradise that is truly part of some extraterrestrial world. Countless times tourists ask: how could things ever get so relaxed?! Strange as it may seem, the pace of life really does slow down here and thus seems to echo the average heart rate. It's a good thing. White sandy beaches, crystalline turquoise water and stiff drinks (must try the famous "Pain Killer") with little pink umbrellas thrust on top are common fare for happy island vacationers.

When looking for things to see on the island of Jost Van Dyke, you're going to have a lot more luck when you turn the creations of nature itself. That's not to say there's nothing going on in town. It's just that there really isn't. Besides the impromptu music of "song" that's been known to burst forth from the locals here in random venues such as seaside coffee shops, it's often recounted that the tranquil swish of the waves lapping against the shore is simply only sound to be heard on the island of Jost Van Dyke.

But then listen closer and you may hear the caw of a colorful tropical bird, and then there's the gentle rustle of the palm trees waving in the wind, the same warm trade winds that caress your face as your lips turn involuntarily into a beatific smile, the same kind that shines throughout your body internally. Really, this is paradise.

And who, in their right mind, would look for "attractions," or "things to do" while practically levitating three inches above the white sandy seashore, ascending into a state of perfect bliss...

Jost Van Dyke is the Attraction

But, alas, some people just don't get it. Funny enough, this still turns out to be a good thing on the island of Jost Van Dyke. Indeed it does, and fortunately for these travelers, satisfaction can also be found if what they are looking for is a little bit more than just a tropical island vacation destination full of palm trees, white sandy beaches and all the rest. Indeed, there are a few fairly interesting things to see and do while staying on the Jost Van Dyke island.

One of the top attractions that tourists from all over the world may love to enjoy seeing here is more of a scene, per se, than a specific destination with a single address. Indeed, believe it or not, it's the coffee shop scene which tourists love about this amazing colonial destination (it used to be a Dutch colony, after all). Hang out and listen to the music of the island locals while you let your body sink into the rhythm, the smoke, the cocktails the relaxation. Suddenly you'll realize that the Caribbean never looked so blue before, and the palm trees never so green, the sugary white sand never quite so white and the sun, oh the sun has never ever been so bright.

Another great attraction on Jost Van Dyke is the vast network of paths and trails that hikers and sight-seeing walkers alike just love to trek around. Coming out of the woods, you'll want to meet the locals and have them show you something that you, perhaps, had never seen before. It's the process of making boats, or "boat making" as the locals call it, which will enthrall any vacationer by the sheer complexity of the workings. The people of Jost Van Dyke take boat making as one of their primary pastimes, pursuits and, indeed, prides.

Lest we forget, one fun little spot you just can't miss is Foxy's. Very popular with yachtsmen, Foxy's is open Monday through Friday for lunch and daily for dinner. The lunch menu includes rotis and burgers, while dinner features filet mignon and lobster, as well as Calypso renditions with Foxy. Please make dinner reservations by 5pm.
